Professor A. Russell Davies was educated at Amman Valley Grammar School and London, Cambridge and Oxford Universities. Having graduated in Mathematics and Physics, he was elected to the Atlas Research Fellowship in Mathematics at Pembroke College, Oxford, and this gave him access to the UK's biggest computer (at the time) at the Rutherford Laboratory. He returned to Wales in 1976 to lecture on Applied Mathematics at Aberystwyth University. He was head of Mathematics at Aberystwyth and Cardiff Universities and currently holds honourary appointments at both establishments. He was elected Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales in 2011.
