Gethin Matthews was born in Lampeter and raised in a Welsh-speaking home in London. After graduating from Cambridge University, he worked for years in the media before starting on a Welsh History doctorate under the supervision of Dr Bill Jones at Cardiff University, researching the history of the Welsh in the Gold Rush to British Columbia. He spent two years teaching in the History and Welsh History Department, University of Cardiff, and supervising the project 'The Welsh of the Great War On-Line' for the University. Since August 2011 he has been a member of the History Department at Swansea University in a position funded by the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol. As well as teaching students at Swansea, he lectures and provides resources to students at the universities of Bangor and Aberystwyth.
