Dr Hywel Jones has worked for the Welsh Language Board since 2003. He studied at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. After graduating he joined the Government Statistics Service at the Business Statistics Office in the Department of Industry in Newport. He moved to the Welsh Office in 1988 where he worked on statistics in several fields. He was responsible for the 1992 Welsh Social Survey, the largest survey ever concerned with the Welsh language. He published several statistical bulletins about the Welsh language and while he was responsible for school statistics he started the annual statistical publication Y Gymraeg yn yr Ysgol. He is a chartered statistician and a fellow of the Royal Society of Statistics.
