Phyl Brake works as a lecturer in the Mid Wales Welsh for Adults Centre where he heads a research programme. Over the years he has written many textbooks for learning Welsh at all levels – from beginners' courses to language skills courses for native Welsh speakers, but his main interest is Linguistics, particularly Sociological Linguistics, or Socio-linguistics. Among his current research projects is a socio-linguistic study of the oral language errors made by Welsh learners, the relationship between learners' attainments and their use of Welsh outside the class, and the linguistic tendencies of Welsh speakers in west Wales.
