The late Professor Ben Barr published extensively and the majority of his papers deal with the strength of building products (particularly concrete) and the building and maintenance of bridges. Having graduated in Civil Engineering he worked in industry at the Wylfa Power Station, building a tunnel near Southampton and then at Aberthaw Power Station. Having completed his doctorate at the University of Wales, Cardiff, he returned to industry and worked on the development of Cardiff Wales Airport and designing bridges. At Cardiff University he was head of the Civil Engineering Section and his chair was sponsored by Tarmac and Carillion. In addition, he was the first editor of the journal Bridge Engineering.
