Dr Sophie Smith is a Lecturer in French under the auspices of the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol at Swansea University. After studying for a doctoral degree funded by the Canolfan Addysg Uwch Cyfrwng Cymraeg, she was appointed to one of the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol’s French lectureships in 2012. She teaches subjects such as the French empire, French language policy, the francophone world and the Algerian War. Her research interests focus on maleness and gender studies. Her doctorate explored the portrayal of maleness in French novels from Islamic countries. She is currently investigating Orientalism and Islamophobia in contemporary popular films.
