Ioan Williams was born in Tredegar. He studied English at Oxford University between 1960 and 1964 and went on to become a lecturer in the English Department at Exeter University. He later moved to Warwick University. He then studied at the Welsh Department, Aberystwyth University, before becoming a teacher at Ysgol Gyfun Gymunedol Penweddig. In 1982, he was appointed lecturer at Aberystwyth University Drama Department and was head of that department between 1990 and 2007. In 2007, he established the journal Gwerddon and was its editor until 2014. During the same period, he chaired the Management Board of Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru. He is currently Emeritus Professor at Aberystwyth University. He has written and edited numerous volumes in Welsh and English on English poetry and fiction Welsh literature and European literature.
